A compelling session titled “Senna Spectabilis and Kattunayakan Livelihood: A Socio-Economic Analysis” brought to light the critical ecological and cultural challenges posed by invasive species in Wayanad. Hosted by the Hume Centre for Ecology and Wildlife Biology, the session in Uravu Bamboo Grove, featured an impactful presentation by Mr. Muneer P.K., who shared his deep insights on the pressing need for biodiversity conservation and sustainable practices. In his presentation, Mr. Muneer highlighted the alarming spread of Senna Spectabilis, an invasive plant species that is disrupting Wayanad’s delicate ecological balance.

The discussion also underscored the profound impact of this ecological shift on the Kattunayakan community, a prominent indigenous group in the region. Deeply connected to the forest for their traditions and livelihood, the community is facing significant challenges as Senna Spectabilis invades their natural surroundings. This encroachment not only harms the environment but also undermines their cultural heritage and economic well-being. Mr. Muneer’s session served as a wake-up call to address the ecological and socio-economic repercussions of invasive species. The event was an eye-opener, leaving participants with a renewed sense of responsibility toward safeguarding Wayanad’s ecosystems and supporting the resilience of its indigenous communities.
